Alberta Seed Growers expands to become the Alberta-British Columbia Seed Growers
June 22, 2022 (Okotoks, Alberta) – Effective immediately, Alberta Seed Growers (ASG) is proud to announce it has amalgamated with the British Columbia Seed Growers to become the Alberta-British Columbia Seed Growers (ABCSG).
Alberta and British Columbia (B.C.) are critical players in Canada’s seed industry; as a united branch association, ABCSG will continue to provide marketing opportunities and advocacy for members locally, regionally, and nationally.
“We are excited to be under one umbrella with the British Columbia Seed Growers,” says ABCSG President, Tracy Niemela. “We want to ensure that seed growers in British Columbia have the same level of recognition and promotion for their pedigreed seed as growers across the country.”
The expansion started over a year and a half ago. Since then, both the Alberta and the B.C. branch members voted to amalgamate our memberships, ultimately establishing the ABCSG organization, which now represents nearly 720 seed growers across western Canada.
ABCSG is one of six associations that serve as a provincial communication link to the Canadian Seed Growers Association (CSGA), the national organization which represents 3,500 seed growers and monitors and certifies seed for agricultural field crops in Canada (except potatoes). Seed Growers in Canada produce some of the highest quality seed in the world, using a world-renowned Quality Assurance Identity Preserved system. CSGA also represents 128 seed companies and a broad cross-section of Canadian businesses developing, producing, selling and exporting seed.
“The two organizations have long shared the same goals and marketing opportunities,” says Niemela. “It was time to make it official and become one organization. This expansion opens the door for more robust information sharing and advocacy for our furthest west, pedigreed seed producers. “
Please note that the ABCSG has a new website, address and social media handle. This information can be found at abcseedgrowers.ca.
